Bedwetting
Also called nocturnal enuresis, bedwetting is the involuntary release of urine, which can occur at night
What causes it:
Bedwetting, also known as (nocturnal enuresis), is the involuntary release of urine during sleep, typically in children over the age of five.
It is a common condition that can result from delayed bladder development, deep sleep patterns, or an imbalance in the hormones that control urine production at night.
While often outgrown naturally, persistent bedwetting can sometimes indicate underlying medical issues such as constipation.
How PFPT helps:
Pelvic floor physical therapy can help with bedwetting by improving the strength, coordination, and control of the muscles that support bladder function.
Your child will work 1:1 with the physical therapist on how to properly engage and relax these muscles, which can help them recognize bladder signals and reduce involuntary urine leakage at night.
Therapy may also address constipation and posture, both of which can impact bladder control.
How long does it take:
There are several factors that play into how long treatment will take including if there is a genetic component (either parent had it when growing up) and underlying medical issues causing the issue such as constipation.
8-10 weeks is typical for a standard case.
